The Park Center boys’ basketball team completed their season as state champions, but recognition for their achievements did not stop there. After their victory, an outstanding player, Braeden Carrington was awarded the 2022 Minnesota title of Mr. Basketball.
Mr. Basketball has been awarded since 1975, and each year, five students are selected in recognition for their performance and sportsmanship. After the season, one of the finalists is selected to receive the title of Mr. Basketball.
Carrington, who averaged 17.8 points per game, was able to make an impact in each game regardless of whether he had the ball in his hands. His presence, motivation, and encouragement energized his teammates through challenging situations.
“Braeden makes players around him better, and yet, he acknowledges how important his teammates are to his personal success. He is talented and selfless, which is rare to find,” said John Hedstrom, activities coordinator.
Carrington was excited to receive this award in front of his teammates, who encouraged him to make remarks.
“I just want to thank my mom, since I wouldn’t be here without her. Then I want to thank my teammates because I don’t think I would have won this award if I didn’t have the team I did,” said Carrington.
Carrington will be attending the University of Minnesota, and has signed to play basketball as a Gopher.
