Osseo Senior High School puts on first Asian Celebration

Osseo Senior High School puts on first Asian Celebration

When two students, Jade Moua and Lily Xiong wanted to create a space for Asian students to celebrate their culture, they decided to create the Oasis club. Initially, when they started the club, they had about 10 members, but now as they are graduating seniors, the Oasis serves more than 60 students.

Student leaders approached principal Sarah Vernig about hosting a celebration during Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Month. They envisioned an event where people could come together, share their affinity and learn more about Asian culture.

“When they talked about this event back in January, they were so excited to share their culture and heritage with other people,” said Vernig.

That excitement carried on throughout the celebration as students and alumni shared their talents through song and dance. Emcees asked the audience what they loved most about Asian culture. People shouted things including food, dance and K-dramas.

“Asian culture is amazing whether it is Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Thai, Laotian and more. They are all adored,” one of the emcees said.
