Cedar Island Elementary School students “taste” books with drive-in movie theater book tasting

Cedar Island Elementary School students “taste” books with drive-in movie theater book tasting

Cedar Island Elementary School Library Media Specialist Kortney Esper is getting students interested in books in a new way with a drive-in movie theater book tasting.

The library is decorated with a red carpet and many drive-in movie theater themed decorations, getting students excited about the book tasting. To begin, students learned about drive-in movie theaters. The students then sat at tables, with boxes on them that looked like cars and were filled with books. Each table had books from a different genre, such as scary, mystery, graphic novels, realistic and fantasy.

When “tasting” a book, the students investigated the cover and description on the back, to see if it sounded interesting to them. They then pursued the first couple of pages to see if it hooked them. The students “tasted” the book they chose for five minutes while the popcorn counter counted down, and then rotated tables to “taste” a new book in a different genre. At the end of their time in the library, they could check out any books that they enjoyed.

“It's a fun way for them to try out books that they would not normally choose for themselves,” Esper said. “I have a lot of students who end up wanting to check out the books that they sampled.  It's a pretty fun way to get books into kid's hands.”
