ScottTaylorPark Brook Elementary Principal Scott Taylor recently received the Health and Fitness Advocacy Award at a celebration sponsored by Minnesota Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MNAHPERD).

The award recognizes outstanding contributions in the promotion of health, physical education, recreation and dance by an individual or organization outside the health and physical education teaching profession.

Taylor has implemented a Focus on Fitness to benefit student health, academic achievement and student engagement, and to help create a climate with positive behaviors at Park Brook.

"We have greatly benefited from the collaboration with a number of community organizations," said Taylor. "I feel honored to receive this award from MNAHPERD."

Some examples of initiatives supporting the Focus on Fitness at Park Brook include:

  • Morning Move and Boot Camp classes for staff and students held before and after school
  • Periodic group outings to participate in such events as the Twin Cities 5K and the Loppet 5K
  • Classrooms outfitted with fitness balls versus traditional chairs
  • Family events with guest speakers on nutrition and fitness related topics

On Nov. 12, Taylor will participate as a member of a panel discussion, composed of healthy school champions, at the Healthy Schools Conference 2014: Take Action for Healthy Kids to be held in Minnetonka.
