2017 athena award winnersTaylor Wente, Maple Grove Senior High; Margot Coomes, Osseo Senior High; and Mikayla Hayes, Park Center Senior High, have been named 2017 Athena Award winners in Osseo Area Schools.  

Throughout their high school careers, Wente, Coomes and Hayes have distinguished themselves as exceptional athletes in multiple sports. In recognition of their outstanding accomplishments, all three women will join Athena Award winners from other Minneapolis-area high schools at the 45th Annual Minneapolis Athena Awards luncheon on May 5. Senior Taylor Wente will attend the University of Minnesota to play hockey. Her athletic accomplishments include:

  • 4-year letter winner in hockey
  • Letter winner in softball
  • All-Conference hockey honors from 2014-2017
  • All-State hockey honors from 2014-2017
  • State All-Tournament Team for hockey in 2016
  • All-Conference softball honors in 2016
  • 2-time world champion with Team USA at IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship
  • Assistant captain of U.S. Women’s National Under-18 Hockey Team

Senior Margot Coomes will attend Concordia University in St. Paul to play lacrosse. She has currently earned 11 varsity letters during her career at Osseo Senior, including five in lacrosse, four in hockey and two in swimming. Coomes’ other athletic accomplishments include:

  • 3-time All-Conference honors in lacrosse
  • Twice named the lacrosse team’s Most Valuable Player
  • Second team All-State honors for lacrosse in 2016
  • 2-time winner of Osseo’s Most Valuable Diver award
  • School record holder in 6- and 11-dive competitions
  • All-Conference Honorable Mention in swimming, hockey and lacrosse
  • Captain of the swimming, hockey and lacrosse teams

Senior Mikayla Hayes will attend the University of Florida to play basketball. During her time on the Park Center Senior High girls’ basketball team, Hayes scored more than 1,000 points; notched over 1,000 rebounds; and had 400-plus blocks. She was a Miss Basketball finalist and a McDonald’s All-American nominee for basketball. Hayes’ other notable athletic accomplishments include:

  • 2-time state champion in basketball
  • 4-time section champion in basketball
  • 3-time conference champion in basketball
  • Twice selected to the State All-Tournament Team for basketball
  • Named an All-Star by the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association
  • First team All-State basketball honors
  • All-Conference volleyball honors
  • Captain of the basketball and volleyball teams
