A thriving partnership between Osseo Area Schools Community Education and Stages Theatre Company means more than 150 elementary students in District 279 have the unique opportunity this school year to showcase their acting talents to classmates, school staff, family, and friends.
Disney’s “The Lion King Kids” represents the second collaboration between Community Education and Stages Theatre Company. This fall, the partnership is giving 55 students at Woodland Elementary the chance to hone their acting, singing and dancing skills on stage. Beginning this winter, Rice Lake Elementary students will have their opportunity to do the same, with Basswood Elementary students taking the stage next spring.
“Last year we coordinated a play between Rice Lake and Stages called ‘Honk! Jr.,’” said Community Education Program Manager Sarah Heyer. “We’re excited to offer ‘The Lion King Kids’ as our play this year for students at three of our schools. It’s been a great experience for students across all elementary grades!”
Woodland students have been rehearsing three hours per week since mid-September, Heyer added. A team of three professionals from Stages Theatre Company, including Education Director Nikki Swoboda, are helming the production’s artistic and technical direction.
Public performances of “The Lion King Kids” by Woodland Elementary students will be held at Maple Grove Middle School (7000 Hemlock Ln., Maple Grove) on the following dates:
- Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.
- Friday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.
- Saturday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m.
Admission to public performances is free. Performance information for Rice Lake and Basswood’s productions will be available later this school year.
