This summer, ten Park Center Senior High students, along with Spanish teacher Valeri Neri, will experience a weeklong cultural immersion program in Guatemala, where they will live and work side-by-side with the Maya people in Cantel. Students will participate in community-led projects such as construction, gardening, painting or weaving. The group will learn about the rich cultural traditions of the Maya people as they are immersed in local community and culture. The experience will be made possible through an Xperitas Global Learners grant, which will fund 80 percent of the cost of the program. Students are fundraising to supplement the remaining costs.
“I am very excited to have this opportunity; it is not often that this type of trip is available for high school students to participate in,” said senior Grace Arel. “I want to be part of something that makes a positive impact on the world, something that is bigger than me.”
Students have been fundraising in a variety of ways including setting up a GoFundMe account: https://www.gofundme.com/TeamPCGuatemala
