Three student athletes from Osseo Area Schools will be honored at the 44th Annual Minneapolis Athena Awards luncheon on May 6. One outstanding female athlete is selected from each of approximately 50 greater Minneapolis area private and public high schools to represent her respective school at the awards ceremony.

This year, District 279’s award winners are Mackenzie Barta, from Maple Grove Senor High; Ari Jones, from Osseo Senior High; and Maddie Heitzig, from Park Center Senior High.


Senior Mackenzie Barta will attend Harvard University to play basketball. Her athletic accomplishments include:

  • 2-year Captain
  • 4-year letter winner in girls basketball, logging significant varsity minutes since she was a 9th grader
  • Unanimous All-Conference NWSC 2015 & 2016
  • Nominee for Ms. Basketball and All-State
  • All-State Academic Award Winner
  • All-State Academic Award Winner
  • Scored more than 1000 points in her varsity career at MGSH becoming only 1 in 5 to accomplish this honor at MGSH


Senior Ari Jones is a three-sport athlete who will have accumulated 12 varsity letters in lacrosse, basketball, and tennis by the time she graduates. Ari will attend Augsburg College and major in biology/pre-medicine.

Additional athletic recognitions include:

  • Varsity starter for four years in both lacrosse and basketball
  • Named the lacrosse team’s Most Improved Player her freshman year
  • Basketball team captain for two years
  • Basketball All-Conference
  • Tennis All-Conference Honorable Mention
  • Tennis two-time section qualifier


Senior Maddie Heitzig has earned a total of eight varsity letters — five in soccer and three in track and field. She has been recognized for All-Conference honors three times for soccer. Maddie was a member of the soccer team that took third place in the state tournament in the fall of 2014 and was named All-Area that year. Maddie was the captain of the soccer team for two years and named MVP one year. She will attend the University of Minnesota majoring in statistics and mathematics and minor in sports management. Maddie is an excellent student with a 3.964 grade point average.
