Students at Rush Creek get reading reward during School Library Month

Each year in April, media centers in schools around the district celebrate School Library Month. During this month and all school year, library media specialists find unique ways to get students engaged in reading and encourage a passion for learning.

At Rush Creek Elementary School, students have been earning tickets all school year from teachers for positive behavior shown. Each Friday, one winner from each classroom is pulled from the box of tickets, and students get to decide which reward they want. Winners are announced over the morning news, and the prize can be used whenever they want.

Rewards include getting a hat day, a lunch fast pass, seeing behind the scenes of RCTV, getting to sit with a friend for lunch and having your art displayed. Another reward students can choose is igloo reading, where they get 15 minutes to read a book of their choice in the igloo constructed in the library out of water jugs.

“This is a great opportunity to reward the students with a fun experience, instead of just a gadgety-prize. It is super fun,” said library media specialist Donna Ohlgren.
