Osseo Middle School students work on mural project
This trimester, students at Osseo Middle School (OMS) participated in Colors of Community, the first of three murals to be created by students as part of a mural project funded by a grant from the District 279 Foundation. The mural explored students' relationships with their surroundings through collaborative art and was spearheaded by art teacher Gretchen Abegglen, in partnership with Indian Education Specialist Jill Lindl and Artist in Residence Kevin Kluever.
Students studied the works of various muralists, including Minnesota Native artists, and learned about creating art for public spaces. Lessons on Minnesota Native tribes and the Seven Grandfather Teachings—truth, humility, respect, love, courage, honesty and wisdom—provided cultural context and deepened their connection to the land. The students engaged in collaborative design sessions, led by Kluever. Kluever assisted students in brainstorming how to use the mural to honor the land on which Osseo Middle School stands and reflect on the people who have been part of the school community over time. Together, they finalized the design and brought the mural to life.
During the second and third trimester of the school year, art students will work on the remaining components of the mural. The completed murals will be displayed this spring at OMS, reflecting the shared history and vibrant spirit of the community.
This project serves as a powerful tool for engagement, allowing individuals to come together and share their unique perspectives and experiences related to our environment,” said Abegglen. “The project promotes cultural expression and diversity, as participants can incorporate their backgrounds and stories into the artwork, highlighting the rich tapestry of our community.”
