Maple Grove Senior High School Unified Art class hosts gallery show

Students in the Unified Art class at Maple Grove Senior High School (MGSH) recently hosted a gallery show and reception to share their collaborative artwork with families, staff and community members.

MGSH is a Unified Champion School, which means they partner with Special Olympics
Minnesota to offer Unified art, music and physical education. These courses pair students of all ability levels together to foster belonging and inclusion in schools. In the art class, led by teacher Erin Boe, the special education and general education scholars come together to create beautiful works of art through the curriculum Boe created especially for Unified classes across the state. This year, the class ran for two trimesters of the school year. 

“I wish it was more trimesters; it was so much fun!” one of the students said at the gallery show.

The projects included a ceramic story quilt, identity collages, abstract landscapes, mini murals with a message, collaborative abstract portraits, a collaborative scratchboard city and self portraits in pastel. Gallery guests could have their picture taken at the photo booth in front of a woven wall hanging project.

The gallery show and reception was hosted on Feb. 22 at MGSH. The gallery will be on display in the MGSH auditorium lobby from now until March 5 for those who were unable to attend the show.
