Reading teachers at Garden City Elementary School have spent two recent Saturday mornings in the school cafeteria, where they’ve invited young learners and their families to participate in literacy events.

The kindergarten and first grade students got plenty of dedicated attention from their caregivers and teachers at the event, as teachers led attendees through a number of different literacy games and activities that families can do together at home.

“GC strives to build strong, lasting relationships with our students and families,” said Title I teacher Fiona Keel, who helped to plan and run the events. “We know students do better academically, socially, and emotionally when parents and schools work together. Parents that attended one of the literacy events gained knowledge on how students learn to read, and they walked away with at-home activities/games that reinforce skills being taught at school.”

The school plans to host more literacy events in the spring.
