FACE hosts Black History Month Event
Each February, schools and students across the district dedicate time to celebrate, honor and learn about people or events that have impacted Black culture in our country’s history during Black History Month. To kick the month off, students, staff and community members gathered at Park Center Senior High School (PCSH) on Feb. 1 for the Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Black History Month Celebration.
This event was organized by the dedicated FACE staff members and students from the PCSH and Osseo Senior High School (OSH) Black Student Union. This was the first year that the event was organized by students from multiple district high schools. During the first half of the event, attendees gathered to enjoy a meal, take their photos in photo booths, dance along to a DJ and visit a number of BIPOC businesses and organizations booths, including Dunwoody College, Minnesota African Women’s Association, Hennepin County Library, Community Junction and other vendors.
The showcase portion of the celebration kicked off with OSH alumni Luther Eskridge, who performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” The founders of the OSH Black Student Union performed their Creed, and PCSH student Ronnie Brown sang “Ordinary People” by John Legend. The celebration ended with dance performances by Hiddo Soor International and Afrocontigbo Dance Company.
