District high schoolers participate in Juneteenth event
High school R.E.A.L (Racial Education Awakening Liberation) Talk student leaders participated in a Juneteenth Event at Osseo Senior High School on May 31. Almost 200 students came together to celebrate and engage in various field day style events.
The students participated in events such as trivia, Connect Four, cornhole, giant Jenga, flag football, kickball, bag races, three-legged races and jump roping. The events were run by members of the Department of Educational Equity team and other district staff members.
Juneteenth, or June 19, officially became a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, but the day is one of the oldest celebrations of freedom in the U.S. On this day in 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The day is also celebrated as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day.
