Celebrating School Lunch Hero Day
Throughout the district, the dedicated workers in Nutrition Services serve scholars each day, helping to keep them fed with healthy and delicious meals and making schools a better place. School Lunch Hero Day was May 2 and serves as a time to recognize the contributions of Nutrition Services.
One School Lunch Hero is Kendra Belcher, who is the kitchen manager at Garden City Elementary School. Belcher is fairly new to the district, and got into nutrition services after working as a CNA and as a care companion and working in the kitchens in the facility she worked in. She has always enjoyed cooking and baking.
Belcher’s favorite part about her job is the great people around her, including the kitchen staff, school staff and students. She really enjoys working with students at the elementary school level because of how excited and outgoing they are.
“School nutrition is really important because you are teaching kids the right types of food to eat, such as fruits and vegetables,” Belcher said. “The other day, we had kiwis, and a lot of the kids were really excited to try it for the first time. I like that we can get them excited about healthier eating at a young age.”
