Procedure 905 - Advertising
<<< Back
- Any solicitation and/or advertising through the schools must adhere to School Board Policies 905 - Advertising, 923 - Use of Students for Distribution of Materials, and 511 Ð Student Fundraising.
- Any person or organization must obtain administrative approval before soliciting or advertising, as defined in this Procedure 905 - Advertising. Exceptions to this provision are as follows:
- Employees of the School Board whose duties involve the purchase of goods or services for District use.
- Instructional materials selection committees when activities are carried out in accordance with Policy 652 - Instructional Materials Selection and Production and Policy 654 Ð Instructional Materials Reevaluation.
- School-connected organizations, such as District and/or community advisory committees, when promoting activities in the best educational interests of the students, staff and general public.
- Specifications
- No solicitation or contact with District employees, except as noted above, is permitted during usual school or office hours. This provision applies to all business concerns and is intended to minimize interruptions of normal school and office operations.
- The District will not promote any activity or product which would knowingly result in conflict of interest to an employee or group of employees of the District.
- Only those organizations authorized by the School Board or the administration will be allowed to offer products for sale to District employees.
- Funds raised to finance student educational trips shall conform to Policy 511 - Student Fund Raising Activities.
- The announcement and distribution of materials through the students shall be limited to provisions contained in Policy 923 - Use of Students for Distribution of Materials.
- Specifically exempted from this policy are extracurricular activities under administrative supervision where there are concessions or where products sold are emblematic of the activity.
- Acknowledgment or recognition by the School Board or the administration of a company offering a product to District employees does not in any way constitute a recommendation, endorsement, or guarantee of the company or product.
- Organizations authorized to offer products to District employees will be allowed to announce and schedule up to two meetings per year using school facilities. These meetings must be scheduled after the normal work day.
- The District shall not distribute or circulate any materials or promotional information relative to products offered by various companies.
- Tickets for admittance to student activities, authorized by the Board, will be sold only under approval of the Principal.
- Tickets for admittance to employee/community activities initiated or sponsored by District/community advisory committees must be sold under supervision of the Principal.
- The following guidelines for special interest educational materials will be adhered to:
- Free teaching materials offered by commercial organizations and special interest groups may be accepted and used in the classroom. The materials should be of a type that teachers seek, not materials that are initiated for use by an outside agency to promote the interests of such agency. Ordinarily the initiative for securing the materials will come from the school. Although the materials may contain advertising, this feature should be inconspicuous and the commercial purposes of the sponsor should not be dominant in the material. Teachers and principals must assume responsibility for allowing use of commercially endorsed educational material and for preventing any outside agency from using the public schools for commercial purposes which do not support the educational or other best interests of the students.
- Use of commercially endorsed educational material requires the approval of the Elementary Director or the Secondary Director.
