Continental Math League
Program Description:
Continental Math League (CML) is a program offered through the Talented and Gifted Department to top math students throughout the Osseo District. Each fall the TAG specialists at each building identify the top math students at each grade level using a variety of criteria. These students will then meet with the TAG specialist approximately once a month throughout the school year during the regular school day.
CML is a national problem solving competition designed for above average math students in grades two through six. Students from across the country have been competing in grade-level CML meets for more than 25 years.
Specifically, CML is designed to:
- Challenge students academically —students will work on word problems that are one to two grade levels ahead of their current grade.
- Strengthen problem-solving skills —students will learn specific steps and strategies and use them to successfully solve the CML word problems.
- Allow above-average math students to compete on a national level —students will compete in the grade-level specific, national CML competition. Students in grades 4-6 will compete in five meets between October and March and students in grades 2-3 will compete in three meets between January and March. Students who compete in all six meets will receive a recognition certificate at the end of the school year. Students who achieve a national top score will be recognized at a district gathering in the spring.
Like all other skills, the development of advanced math skills requires practice. Therefore, there will be homework assigned during each CML session. Homework is due at the following CML session. Students who repeatedly do not bring homework or bring incomplete homework may not be allowed to continue in CML. Parents are invited to guide and encourage their children through the CML homework.
