American Indian Education
American Indian Education serves American Indian students by developing their understanding and appreciation of their American history and culture. The secondary program focuses on preparation for post-secondary education. Home involvement in schooling is enhanced through the American Indian Parent Group.
1.1.1 Parent Advisory
Purpose:
In accordance with federal law, public school districts with 10 or more American Indian students must have an American Indian Advisory Committee. The American Indian Education Committee of the Osseo Schools serves to ensure that the unique and culturally-related academic needs of American Indian students are being met.
The current mission of the Indian Education Program is to empower American Indian students and their families to enhance their educational potential through special, unique, and culturally related educational programming. The mission statement reflects three key values the committee and program staff hold in common: 1) the importance of our children; 2) the importance of education; and 3) the importance of American Indian culture and heritage.
Function:
The committee, operating in accordance with committee by-laws, oversees the Indian Education Program and evaluates progress in meeting program goals. In addition, committee members are involved in an advisory capacity in the hiring of personnel who carry out program goals.
Membership:
The committee is made up of parents of American Indian students, teachers, and American Indian secondary students.
