BOOLEAN LOGIC

Understanding the rudiments of Boolean logic will help students refine their searches and retrieve information more specific to the topic they are researching. George Boole, a mathematician, developed a set of logical operators   ("and", "or" and "not") that are often used in electronic catalogs and Internet  search engines. The use of Boolean logic requires that students analyze the relationships between previously identified keywords to make the search process more efficient. The process allows students to use multiple keywords at the same time while more clearly defining and/or limiting the search.

"AND":

And is used to connect two terms or ideas. Using and in a search will return only information that includes both concepts.

EXAMPLE: AFRICAN and ELEPHANTS

"OR":

Or is used synonymous terms. Using or indicates that information on either topic is wanted.

EXAMPLE: POLAR or BEARS

"NOT":

Not is used to exclude a term or idea. Using not indicates that information on one topic is wanted, but not the other.

EXAMPLE: DOLPHINS not FOOTBALL
