VISUAL LEARNING TECHNIQUES  wpe10.jpg (7432 bytes)

Visual learning techniques - graphical ways of working with ideas and presenting information - teach students to think clearly, and to process, organize and prioritize information. Visual diagrams stimulate creative thinking, as well as reveal relationships, patterns and interdependencies. Webbing, idea mapping and concept mapping are three of the tools most often employed with visual learning.

Inspiration

Inspiration is a software package that facilitates the creation of mind maps using a computer. The theory regarding the use of visual learning techniques is discussed (using a mind map!), and teachers can download a trial version of the software. Example diagrams and newsletters which include examples of how the software can be used in the classroom all contribute to making this an outstanding site for educators.

Learning Resources

An online learning module for students wanting to learn how do a mind map. Geared towards college and university students, but content could easily be adapted for K12 usage by creative teachers.

Learning Skills Program:

Describes concept mapping and provides specific guidelines on creating a concept map. Helpful for teachers wanting to demonstrate the process to students.
