The Pulitzer Prizes were established in 1917 with an
endowment from Joseph Pulitzer, an American newspaper publisher, to
Columbia University to recognize significant achievements in journalism,
letters, drama and music. Prizes in letters are awarded in the categories
of fiction, general nonfiction, history, poetry and
biography/autobiography.
