Award Descriptions

ALA Best of the Best

Librarians selected the one hundred titles they consider to be the best books for young adults from the last half of the twentieth century. Titles were chosen from the Best Books for Young Adults Booklists published from 1966 to 2000.

ALA Quick Pick

The Quick Picks Committee seeks books that teens will pick up on their own and read for pleasure. The list is geared to the teenager who, for whatever reason, does not like to read. The visual appearance of a book and the standard considerations in the quality of content is equally important when selecting books for reluctant young readers. Teen input is a vital aspect in the final decision of the committee.

Alex Award

A selection of books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults.

Coretta Scott King

The Coretta Scott King Award is presented annually by the Coretta Scott King Task Force of the ALA's Social Responsibilities Round Table. Recipients are authors and illustrators of African descent whose distinguished books promote an understanding and appreciation of the "American Dream".

Newbery Award

The Newbery Medal was named for 18th-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association (ALA), to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Printz Award

The Michael L. Printz Award is an award for a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature. It is named for a Topeka, Kansas school librarian who was a long-time active member of the Young Adult Library Services Association.

Pulitzer Prize

The Pulitzer Prizes were established in 1917 with an endowment from Joseph Pulitzer, an American newspaper publisher, to Columbia University to recognize significant achievements in journalism, letters, drama and music. Prizes in letters are awarded in the categories of fiction, general non-fiction, history, poetry and biography/autobiography.
