Our expectations of you in Trimester 2 fall into
3 categories:
Participation(15%):
You will be graded on how well you stay on task in this class. This
class is very hands-on and you will be expected to work on your
assignments and website projects in class. There will be many
times when there is no specific assignment, but instead we will be
"adding to and improving" your 2 websites. Since the time is not
structured, you may be tempted to chill. Avoid that urge- improve
your Web Design skills! You can never learn all there is to know
about the topic. Don't think you know it all after a couple of weeks.
Depending on whether we have 1st tri, 2nd tri, and 3rd tri students all in the same class, you will receive little or some lecture/group discussion from me. On occasion, I will call the 3rd tri students together to demonstrate a technique. Most of the time, however, you will use this curriculum, the Java book, and the Internet as your teacher. I will, of course, be there to answer questions.
Acceptable Internet Use:
You
will be required to follow the Park Center acceptable use policy for computers and the
Internet in this class. These computers are for school work only.
If you need to write an email to a friend, surf for punk bands, or
buy online... get a computer at home!! There is nothing wrong with
these activities, they are just not what these computers were
purchased for. If you violate this policy, you will lose
participation points. If you repeatedly misuse the computers, you
will be removed from the class.
Assignments and Quiz(25%):
You will have one paper quiz at the end of the trimester on the basics of Java and digital video editing. Like 1st and 2nd trimesters, there will be assignments(projects) worth points also. The projects will be longer than those of 1st or 2nd trimester and fewer. These may be turned in anytime during the trimester for full points, but I encourage you to try to stay on pace with us. This may involve bringing some of these projects home as homework.
Design and
Maintain 2(or more) Websites:
These will be graded on a particular day(usually each Friday) and are due that day or they are late. Late assignments can be turned in for one-half credit for up to 5 school days. In addition you will be required to complete a WebLog of all updates to both pages on a weekly basis. Sixty percent of your grade
will be based on your abilities and efforts in designing,
maintaining, and updating at least 2 websites:
New School
Website(35%)- You will be responsible for creating a website related
to life at Park Center. You may have some choice in the area
of PC that you focus on. Rholl may also assign you a focus area.
This website will be loaded on the Park Center webserver with a
direct link to the PC mainpage. This website will require
contacting/researching/interviewing people in the Park Center
community much like you would do as a professional web designer to
determine the content and focus of the website. To get an A for this section you will be expected to include the 2 new skills of Trimester 3: a java applet of your creation and streaming video to this webpage.
Updating Existing
Website(s)(25%)- You will be assigned one or more existing websites on the Park Center homepage. You will again need to maintain a connection with people in the organization(s) at Park Center that you are representing. At minimum, you will be responsible for keeping the websites current. That will earn you a C grade for this section. Adding/improving the website will earn you higher points. To get an A or B for this section you will be expected to include the 2 new skills of Trimester 3: a java applet of your creation and streaming video to these webpages.
