Good Versus Bad

The truth about how words effect Students

Have you ever seen your student depressed and upset Maybe they are extremely happy and cheerful. That is the effect of words. Remember the age old phrase, "Sticks and Stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me." That phrase could never be more wrong. The way students are viewed by the people around them puts a great pressure on them.

Good

Good words can cause a student to be more energetic and have a higher self-esteem. They can be great help to the people around. If a student hears something like, "She's a good worker." The student is bound to work more, be a lot better at it, and be more enthusiastic about it. If a student hears, "He is the best quarterback there is." That Student is more likely to try harder and get better at football just to keep that sort of phrase coming. Students tend to work harder to hear the good phrase again and they also seem to become happy. Watch out! Too much of a good thing can be bad. If a student hears too many good things they may become cocky and think that they are better than another student at it and start to treat that student badly.

Bad

Bad words can cause a student to be depressed, hurt, and feel very lonely and lost. Bad words bring down a student's self-esteem. If a student hears the things said about them they may feel sad, hurt, confused, and lost, especially if the person saying the things is someone they thought was a friend. Rumors can be bad words or phrases. Such as, "Jaime Lynn Spears had a baby at 16." You're emphasizing the bad parts. A major draw down and this sides "Watch Out!" is too much of a bad thing can cause death or a severe mental/emotional disorder.

Is there a middle ground?
