#1. What are the two most common compression formats for images on the web?

#2. Which of the two formats is described as "lossy"? What does lossy mean?

#3. Which image format is generally used for photos?

#4. Which format is limited to 256 colors and works best on flat images?

#5. Which image format allows you to create truly transparent portions of the original image?

Examples: Each of the following images is in the rarely used PNG format. For each of the images, first predict which compression format will give you the smallest size at an acceptable quality. Then open the image(it's in your exercise folder) up in Adobe Photoshop(it's on your desktop). Do a Save for Web of the png image(to do this you need to make sure you open up the original png file each time) in both GIF and JPG format to your folder. Note: If you work at home and don't have Photoshop, use Microsoft PhotoEditor. Now check the file size of both the GIF and JPG images and write the size of each next to your prediction. To check file size, find your image. Do not open the image, but instead right mouse click to Properties. Write your answers in bold. Trash all four of the images from your folder when you are done.
