The Moon

Lunar Features
  • Crater: A circular depression caused by the impact of a meteoroid.
  • Highland: Ancient, heavily cratered area on the Moon. This area is light colored and of higher elevation than the 'lunar seas', aka- mare. Most of the backside of the moon is highland area.
  • Mare (maria, plural): A large, dark, crater-free plain on the moon. It was created by huge lava flows that filled low-lying regions of the Moon 3.5 billion years ago.
  • Ray: Bright, long streaks on the lunar surface. It was formed by the violent spewing of material during impact with the surface.
  • Rille: Trench-like depression on the lunar surface. It was formed during cooling of the lunar surface or impact cratering (crack).
