During this last spring break, the Park Center baseball team went down to Florida for spring training. The opportunity to be on the Florida team is opened to any player that wants to go. Coach Jeff Stoll has been doing this for many years now. This was seniors’ Nick Tieden, Donny Thomas, Ryan Bahnemann, and Ted Henrickson's second time going down there. Down in Florida, coaches have one on one time with players that need help for the regular season. Parents start planning this trip at the end of each regular season game. There are only 16 available spots, and seniors have the first options. After the seniors decide if they want to go, the available spots are opened to the juniors, then the sophomores and so on.
Every morning at seven o’clock, the team started their day with breakfast at the Golden Corral. The Golden Corral is a buffet and is only open to the high school baseball teams that are down there. After they were done eating, they would go to the fields and have practice or a scheduled game. At night, the team would either stay at the hotel or they would have a night game down at the fields.
The hotel and baseball fields are located in Fort Pierce. The players stayed at the
Comfort Suites and the parent stayed at a different hotel. Some parents choose not to stay at hotels, but instead rent a house for the week. It’s cheaper than staying at the hotel and you can share the house with other parents staying down there as well.
Over all, 12 seniors, 3 juniors, and 1 sophomore made up the team that went down to Florida. Each player had equal amount of time out on the fields as the rest. Their record was 2-6, which isn’t too bad for spring training. Everyone had a good time and the juniors and sophomores are looking forward to the next spring training. And to the seniors – good luck this season.
