On Thursday, November 15, the Asian club held its 2nd annual cook-off. This year there were thirty kids, five teams, and seven judges. Each team was tasked with recreating a certain style and culture of cuisine in just an hour. The requirements included an appetizer, an entrée, and a dessert. With five culinary styles represented, the contest was not lacking in variety.
Team One prepared an Italian delicacy consisting of Fried Calamari, Stuffed Chicken Alfredo, and Strafoli. Team Two’s Indian offering included a serving of Chicken Curry with tomatoes, Cobobe Lime and Mango Ice Cream. Team Three prepared Japanese rice balls, Sushi and Tier fruit. With Maria at the helm, Team Four recreated an authentic Mexican meal consisting of Enchiladas de Mole, Agua de Orchate and Fruit salad. Team Four channeled Thailand and prepared Pa Thai soup and a smoothie for the judges.
As the contestants hustled during the alloted preparation time, the limit was extended by about a half an hour, a move appreciated by the vying teams and judges. When judging finally began, the aroma emanating from Room 128 had flooded the hallways, attracting more than a few unexpected guest. However, all this was overshadowed by the heightened anticipation of the judges and spectators who hoped to partake in the feast.
The returning Champions, Team Two (X-Angels) hoped for another rendezvous with the trophy, but it was Maria and the rest of Team Four who walked away with the trophy and bragging rights. Their secret: great presentation and even better food. As the event came to a close, preparation had already begun for next year’s annual Asian Club cook-off.
