Recently, an informational video was created at Park Center. This video, made with the help of the PC Media Staff, PC students, and a few outside sources, was created to help spread awareness about teen safety on the internet.
Earlier this year, the Library Specialist Media Group formed a committee with the intentions helping to educate teenage students about the dangers of the internet. The committee’s largest concern was students posting personal information on social networking websites such as 'Myspace' and 'Facebook'. By placing this information on these websites, students can make themselves vulnerable to online predators. In addition to this, many employers and colleges are using these networking sites as a way to screen employees and students that have applied. In the past, many students around the nation have lost jobs and scholarships for placing information alluding to illegal activity on their personal pages.
In order to create this video, Park Center's Ms. Anna Teeple(right) enlisted the help of Ms. Barbara Kinsmith from Brooklyn Junior, Ms. Lisa Finsness as a script writer, and Mr. Randy Stengel to help edit the movie. In addition to these people, ten students from Park Center were chosen to act in the movie. These students were chosen for this video due to involvement in the Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) program, involvement in the Drama Department, or if they were recommended by a teacher.
The Library Specialist Media Group decided to make a movie when they found that there is not much along the lines of informational videos that deal with this subject matter. Once the video has been reviewed by the district, it will be shown to both Junior High and Senior High students throughout the district. The video is about 11 minutes long and covers various topics of internet security. If the video is approved it will most likely be shown to students in their advisory periods starting in the fall of the 2007/2008 school year.
