Jesse Lindhorst

Jesse Lindhorst receives merit for this years Scholastic Arts and Writing award for his work “Stand Out”. When I asked Park Center senior Jesse Lindhorst about his thought process in creating “Stand Out”, he said “Eventually I just kept adding details that made the picture stand out with its clean black and white setting. My style is shown in this picture throughout the line thickness and realistic details brought out on the figure. The face is where you can really tell my style from anything else; it shows a cartoon / Japanese animation style in the eyes and hair.”

Students in grades 7 through 12 from throughout the State of Minnesota competed in the Scholastic Arts and Writing contest, which is held every year in February. There are 16 visual arts categories in the competition, which includes separate contests for students in grades 7 through 9 and grades 10 through 12.

Regional awards include Certificates of Merit, Silver Key and Gold Key winners. Gold Key winning artwork nominated from each region across the country is forwarded to New York for national judging. Fifteen thousand pieces from 80 regions compete for national honors. Top winning Art portfolios and Photography portfolios from each region are sent on to compete for national scholarships.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program was founded in 1923 by M. R. Robinson, publisher of The Scholastic magazine and founder of today’s Scholastic Inc., a well-known educational publishing and media company.

The Awards were designed to foster creative expression by secondary students and to recognize and encourage achievement in the creative arts by offering visibility and scholarships. Supported by the grassroots efforts of 90 regional organizations serving 35 states, the Awards are the largest, longest-running and most generous program in the country recognizing the creative work of young Americans.

Alumni of the Awards have been some of the country’s leading artists, including Richard Avedon, Mel Bochner, Philip Pearlstein, Red Grooms, Robert Redford and Andy Warhol—all of whom were recognized by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards while still in high school.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are held every year at the MCAD gallery in Minneapolis. Although Jesse received a merit award for this prestigious competition, we have yet to have work from Park Center exhibited. Considering the unbelievable talent we have at P.C., that fact is bound to change. Now is the time to plan for next year’s competition.
