The Food and Consumer Science’s dairy unit studies nutrition and the preparation of dairy products. We need to help students think about the importance of the intake of calcium during their teen years in order to build bone density for future bone health. Not only that, but we want students to know and think about the choices they have as consumers and how low-fat dairy products provide us with high quality protein and calcium.

Also, as a department, we encourage students to think about the alternatives of dairy for those with lactose intolerance or just for something different. In our dairy unit, we have a milkshake taste test in which the students compare and contrast the flavor, texture and the appearance of the milkshakes. The milkshakes were made with 2% milk, skim milk or soy milk and ice cream, frozen yogurt or rice frozen dessert. The FACS department wants to help students explore what dairy products provide for them and expand their knowledge of foods.
