Thursday, Dec. 8th at 7:30pm, The Park Center Senior High Orchestras and the Brooklyn Junior High Orchestras are in concert in the Alyce Marlin Auditorium at PCSH.
The featured music will consist of music from the movies Guys & Dolls, Nocturne and a new, exciting piece called Warrior’s Run.
As always the concert is free and open to the public
The pieces will be performed by either the Chamber Orchestra or the Symphony Orchestra
Chamber Orchestra
- Short Overture for Strings by Jean Berger (pronounced - Zhahn Berzhay)
This piece features a main theme that is heard over and over again, providing unity to the piece. The call and response sections provide interest and contrast to the sections where the orchestra is playing all together or “tutti”.
- The festive sound of Three Spanish Christmas Carols evokes images traditionally associated with Spain and its customs during the holiday season. Fish, the moods of the sea, the exchange of gifts and traditional food, a mother’s love and a festival atmosphere provide the texts and inspiration for these joyous carols.
- Northridge Drive by Caesar Giovannini sounds like a drive through the hills of Los Angeles or a theme from a late 60’s or early 70’s TV show to many listeners. The strong rhythmic and syncopated passages are very characteristic of that time period.
Symphony Orchestra
- Music from Guys & Dolls
All the hot gamblers are in town, and they're all depending on Nathan Detroit to set up this week's incarnation of "The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York"; the only problem is, he needs $1000 to get the place. Throw in Sarah Brown, who's short on sinners at the mission she runs; Sky Masterson, who accepts Nathan's $1000 bet that he can't get Sarah Brown to go with him to Havana; Miss Adelaide, who wants Nathan to marry her; Police Lieutenant Brannigan, who always seems to appear at the wrong time; and the music/lyrics of Frank Loesser, and you've got quite a musical. Includes the songs Guys and Dolls, Luck Be a Lady, I’ve Never Been In Love Before, A Bushel and a Peck, Follow the Fold, If I Were A Bell, Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.
The Park Center Drama Department will be presenting Guys and Dolls in March. Auditions are on Dec. 14-15 in the auditorium, time to be determined. Show dates are March 10-12 and 16-18. Everyone is welcome to audition, grades 10-12.
- Warrior’s Run by Kirt N. Mosier is a piece that was commissioned by Phylis K. Hamilton for the inaugural performance of the newly formed Lee’s Summit Missouri Symphony. The Symphony wanted an exciting piece that had Hans Zimmer type scoring and effects.
German-born composer Hans Zimmer is recognized as one of Hollywood’s most innovative musical talents, having first enjoyed success in the world of pop music as a member of The Buggles. The group’s single Video Killed the Radio Star became a worldwide hit and helped usher in a new era of global entertainment as the first music video to be aired on MTV.
The idea behind Warrior’s Run is the picture of a warrior running into battle. The middle section features the strings playing many contrapuntal lines. This is meant to depict the sound of feet running through the forest into battle.
- Also featured is a piece called Nocturne, more info will be added as it becomes available.
