Dear Teacher,

Welcome to Surfing Safari. The purpose of this web site is to help your students learn how to use the Internet  effectively. They will learn various strategies that will help them find relevant and useful information for assignments quickly and successfully. By the end of the unit, they will be able to:

explain in their own words what the Internet is,
use an online language dictionary to look up the meaning of words,
use an online encyclopedia to look up information on a topic,
use a search engine that uses subject directories to look for information,
use a search engine that requires keywords to look for information,
use simple Boolean logic (and, or, not) between keywords to narrow down research topics,
look for multimedia such as pictures, sound files and video clips on the Internet
save an image to a disk, and
insert an image into another document such as Word or PowerPoint

There is also a research assignment they could be required to turn in once they have completed the unit. It goes without saying that you are welcome to change this assignment to suit your own needs! Don't worry - it's not a complex  assignment, and your students should have fun looking for the information they will need to complete it! You are also encouraged to ask your media staff to help you if you experience any problems looking for or presenting information. Good luck, and have fun on the Surfing Safari...
