USING "AND"

When you're using more than one keyword to do a search, the search engine has to decide how to do the search. Should it look for web sites where all the words appear, or should it look for web sites where only one of the words appear?

Most search engines assume that you included the word "and" when you typed the keywords into the search box, i.e. it finds web sites where all of the words appear in the same site. In other words, when you type into the search box

African elephants

Search

the search engine thinks it sees

African AND elephants MUST APPEAR IN THE WEB SITE

Search

You could illustrate this in another way using a concept that you've probably learnt about in math - a diagram of two sets showing the sites that will be listed if you type in the example we used previously:

The circle on the left represents all the web sites that the search engine could find containing the word "African". The circle on the right represents all the web sites that the search engine could find containing the word "elephants". The colored area represents all the web sites that contain both keywords.

REMEMBER: Not all of the search engines do this, so the best idea is to type in AND yourself.

African AND elephants

Search

This way you can ensure that the search engine does exactly what you want it to do!
