ENCYCLOPEDIAS

Looking for a short article on a given topic, but don't have access to a printed encyclopedia? No problem - it is possible to access several very good encyclopedias using the Internet. Our school subscribes to World Book, and this is the encyclopedia we will be looking at on this safari. Happy hunting!

INSTRUCTIONS

First read through and then follow the instructions provided here.

Click on the ship to go the Park Center home page:
Click on Media Center and scroll down a little before clicking on Online Reference Resources - this will take you to some really good reference resources that Park Center subscribes to.
Click on World Book - the page will look like this:

For the purposes of this tutorial, you will be looking up information on any wild animal of your choice - something that you would come across while on safari! Type the name of the animal in the search box and click on "GO".  Remember, correct spelling is important when doing any kind of electronic search, so check with your teacher if you need to!

World Book will probably find more than one article on your topic. Take a look at some of them, and find the one that provides you with the best information. Also note the links provided elsewhere on the page referring you to additional information on the topic - click on some of them and look where it takes you to!

At the top of the article, you will find a little tool box that will allow you to print or e-mail the article.  The screen will look similar to this one:

Click on the area that says "Print Article". The next screen will allow you to narrow down the choice of what you want to print. This will prevent you from printing everything there is on your topic, and therefore wasting paper. The screen will look similar to this one:

Choose the sections you want to print, and then click on the PRINT button. Note that the next screen does not have the yellow side bar, making your notes more legible and saving paper! It will look similar to this one:

The next step is to print the page. Go up to FILE on the toolbar, and select PRINT.  The next screen will look like this:

Check the number of copies you will require (usually one) and click on OK. Keep the copy in your file for later use.

Return to BASE CAMP when you have completed this task.
