The Diviners

Written in 1980 by Jim Leonard Jr., and set in the early years of the Great Depression, "The Diviners" is a stunningly theatrical play about a disturbed young man named Buddy. When he was young, Buddy almost drowned. The trauma and loss of his mother in the same accident leaves him deathly afraid of water, but it also leaves him with the ability to predict rain and to divine water. His subsequent refusal to bathe makes him an outcast in the small Indiana town, even though the townspeople often rely upon his skills. Then Buddy develops an unlikely friendship with an itinerant preacher who comes to town in search of work...
