The purpose of social studies education is to help all students understand their heritage and their roles as members of a global society, and to become empowered citizens who are responsible for the well-being of the current and future world. To become an empowered citizen in a democracy, all students need to learn to access information, think critically, respect diversity and be active in their communities.
