How do I sign up to use the media centers?

Any classroom teacher may sign up to use the Library Media Center. Several different areas are available depending on your need. A calendar of open hours and areas is available in the Library Media Center if you want to stop by in person. . Otherwise if you prefer, you can email your requests for reservations to or Jan in the Library. Jan also schedules the shared labs (AV, 132 and MAC lab 105).  Click here for more information about scheduling shared labs.

What if I have an idea for a lesson that would involve use of the Media Center, but I really don't know enough about the Media Center to put the whole lesson together?

While many teachers that use the media center are doing assignments that they have used previously some are trying a lesson for the first time. In instances where teachers have new untried media center assignments, or just an idea for a media center assignment, Toni and/or Jan would love to meet with you about your new assignments and to collaboratively plan how the media center can best be used to meet the needs of your students. In cases where you are doing a media center assignment you have done before, just let Jan or Toni know which assignment it is so that they can prepare to help your students succeed.

Will my students know how to use the media center when I bring them in?

Even though all sophomores receive an orientation to the media center, when it comes time to actually do an assignment, they often need help. Some directions as to how to get started, some help in determining where the best resources for their particular assignment might be located and some directions as to how to proceed are all common at the beginning of the Media Center visit. In addition, most students will need guidance during the process of completing the assignment. Toni and Jan are happy to work collaboratively with you to provide the help students need.

Are there some things that are important for me to know about using the Media Center?

Toni, Jan , the support staff, and other teachers would be very appreciative of the following:

• Please help the Library staff to enforce the student policies regarding the use of the Library. The student policies can be found by clicking on the policies link at the bottom of this page.
• Please be aware that often the Media Center isused by 2-3 different classrooms, and walk in students, simultaneously. Please help to keep your students in their assigned areas and working on their task rather than in another teacher's space or distracting another teacher's students.
• Please help to keep your students seated in their area until the bell rings rather than amassing by the doorway. Not only is it impolite of students to be walking through and distracting another classroom of students, it also becomes very difficult to monitor who may set off the security system when students pass through it in mass.
• Please have an alternative lesson as a back up in case the network is down. Also, please evaluate carefully whether or not it is in your students, and other teachers, best interests to send your students to the Media Center if you have a substitute. Students are generally very well behaved in the Media Center but, the exceptions to this typically occur when a sub is present. When there are substitutes in the Media Centers, some students will take advantage of the fact that the sub does not know: 1.) who is in their class and who belongs in another class, 2.) what the Media Center policies are and what behaviors are unacceptable (e-mail...) and 3.) enough about your assignment to be able to help students. It is not fair to the other students and teachers using the Media Centers if the Media staff need to spend excessive time monitoring behavior issues of a class with a sub, rather than helping students.
