American Legion Speech: Each year the Osseo American Legion sponsors a speech
competition. The speech must be 8 minutes minimum and 10 minutes maximum. The topic
changes each year and is announced through the Student Bulletin. The winner from Osseo
will be rewarded a $100.00 prize and the chance to compete for scholarships worth
thousands of dollars, second place receives a $50.00 prize.
Amnesty International: Osseo's Amnesty club is part of a worldwide human rights
monitoring organization. Students write letters bi-weekly to nations that are accused of
abusing their citizen's human rights.
Close-Up: Close-up is a study trip to Washington, DC in late February or early
March. Students study at the Capitol and speak with their legislators. They also attend a
dinner play. Students really enjoy their trip and there are a series of fund
raising activities to help defray the costs.
Maple Grove Partnership: Over the past seven years, the City of Maple Grove has
invited OSH Government students to be participating/voting members on city commissions
during the trimester the student has a government class. About twenty students each
trimester serve on the commissions.
Model United Nations: Hamline University sponsors a Model United Nations
Conference during President's weekend in February. Osseo students are invited to attend.
The sessions run for three days and and three to four participants represent member
nations of the UN. The sessions are divided into committees to resolve problems related to
political, economic and environmental issues. The culminating activity is a General
Assembly where all issues brought through the committees must finally pass.
Page Program: Each year the Minnesota House of Representatives sponsors a page
from the Junior class in each legislative district. Osseo High School may submit Junior
candidates for the Page program. The Pages serve for one week at the legislature and
assist with work on the floor of the House. This is an excellent opportunity for students
serious about government service.
Student Class Committees: These groups organize social and school spirit
activities such as Homecoming and Spring Fling (Senior Class), Prom and Sno Daze (Junior
Class), and Sophomore Semi Formal (Sophomore Class). It is organized by class. Any student
interested in being on a class committee should should contact the appropriate advisor to
be included. Committees start getting established at orientations before school starts in
the fall.
Student Senate: The Student Senate is elected by the student body to act as their
representatives in working to improve the school climate, to resolve student related
issues, to increase school spirit, to represent the student body in discussion, meet with
the administration and faculty, and generally be advocates for the student body. They meet
Tuesday and Thursday mornings before school. Seven Seniors, six Juniors and five
Sophomores will be elected by their respective classes during the third week in September.
Anyone can be a candidate if they complete the requirements which are posted the first
week of school.
Voice of Democracy: The Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsors an essay contest each
year for all high school students. The winner from Osseo will be awarded a $200 prize and
the chance to compete for scholarships worth thousands of dollars. The second place winner
will receive a $100 prize.
