Overview: The courses offered in the Family and Consumer Science
department are valuable for everyday life as well as stepping stones to careers.
Most of the courses are composed of real, practical problems you face in life with
hands-on experience to solve them. This page informs you about all the classes in
the Family and Consumer Science Department.
Program Mission: The Family and Consumer Science program is devoted
to affect the optimum well being of individuals and families by recognizing
families as the fundamental social unit.
Instructional Rationale: The application of research to solve problems of individuals and families.
Teaching preventive strategies in addressing the issues of individuals and families.
Curricula will include critical thinking and consumer decision-making skills.
Program Outcomes: Encourage life-long learning.
Develop understanding of positive relationships.
Consumers will manage personal resources.
Facilitate career exploration and development of work-related skills.
Areas to study include: child development and parenting nutrition, wellness, food prep,
community service, housing, apparel and textiles.
College Credit: Students taking all three (3) child development courses and earning
a B in each will receive 5 Tech Prep college credits from Hennepin Technical college.
These credits are good for 5 years and will transfer to their child development program.
Courses can be taken in any sequence and in multiple years of high school.
