What is it?
The Speech Team is a great opportunity to showcase and improve your speaking skills, and meet a lot of cool people in the process!

Who can join?
Any student at OSH!

When is the first meeting?
Please contact someone to find out, in the contact link.

When’s the season?
Officially, our meets start in January. However, we will need to practice before that to get pieces ready! The season usually ends mid-April.

When are practices?
One of the great things about speech is that you can practice any time you want to! We will have some team practices, but most of the time it can be an individual thing. You and I will set up times to practice whenever works for both of us.

Time commitment?
The time commitment can be flexible. I require that you practice once with me for 20 continuous minutes before each meet you compete in, but the more you practice, the better you’ll be!

When are meets?
Saturday mornings. (But not every Saturday).

What are they like?
Students come from dozens of different schools to compete. There is usually food to buy, and time to meet people and hang out. You compete three times, in three different rooms, for three different judges. There are usually about 6 people competing in each room.

What if I’m in a sport?
That’s another great thing about Speech! Since the time commitment is so flexible, you can participate even if you are in a sport or other activity. People have been in Speech at the same time as both a sport and the play!

What if I’m not a good speaker?
That’s okay too! In fact, this is the perfect opportunity for you to work on it! Doing things you’re not good at yet shows a lot of character.

Can I letter?
Yes. There will be specific requirements for lettering in Speech. They will include coming to a certain number of practices, coming to a certain number of competitions, and things like leadership, attitude, and helpfulness.
