National Honor Society Bylaws

  1. Attendance

    1. Attendance at all NHS meetings is mandatory. All members are expected to be on time and ready to participate actively.
    2. If a member is over five (5) minutes late to two meetings without a legitimate, written excuse, on absence will be assessed.
    3. If a member has one (1) unexcused absence, he/she will receive written notice to appear before the Executive Board. If that member has a second unexcused absence, he/she will receive notice to appear before the Faculty Council for review and/or dismissal. Parents will receive written notification of Faculty Review.

  2. Dismissal

    1. Procedure - The member will be notified in writing and a copy of the letter will be given/sent to the student's parents.
    2. Grounds for probation and/or dismissal:
      1. If the member's GPA falls below 3.5, the member will be given written notification placing him/her on probation. He/She will have the remainder of that grading period to bring his/her cumulative GPA back to or above 3.5. Failure to raise GPA to 3.5 will mean dismissal from NHS.
      2. Breaking any law or eligibility rules of the State High School League, Independent School District #279, the state of Minnesota or the cities of Osseo, Maple Grove, or Brooklyn Park will result in a Faculty Review followed by possible probation or dismissal from NHS.
      3. Displaying a lack of character (cheating, lying, etc.) is subject to review by the Faculty Council, followed by possible probation or dismissal from NHS.
      4. As stated in the National Constitution, once a student has been dismissed from NHS, he/she may never be reinstated.

  3. Service

    1. When the student is selected into NHS he/she is expected to continue the leadership and service for which he/she was elected. This includes participation in three (3) hours of chapter fundraising activities, twelve (12) hours of approved chapter service projects and fifteen (15) additional hours of individual service to be completed during the member's senior year.
    2. Any chapter fundraising hours exceeding the five mandatory hours of chapter approved service project hours exceeding the ten mandatory can be counted towards the required amount of individual service time. However, individual service hours exceeding the mandatory fifteen hours that is not approved chapter service project work cannot be counted towards the fundraising or service project hours.
    3. Verification of individual service projects is required.
