In this quick-paced gothic fantasy, teenager Poison leaves her rural village to fight back and find her baby sister, who was kidnapped by phaeries. Poison is a tall, thin girl with violet eyes, long black hair, and a stubborn and cranky personality. She encounters a series of dangers on her journey, accompanied by a housemaid, a middle-aged man, and a cat. They enter various realms--the human, phaerie, and arachnid kind--where Poison’s demeanor becomes an asset on her quest.
2 Westerfeld, Scott. Uglies. Simon and Schuster/Simon Pulse, 2005. $6.99. (0-689-86538-4). Fiction Fifteen-year-old Tally's postapocalyptic society gives extreme makeovers to teens on their sixteenth birthdays. When a top-secret agency threatens to leave Tally ugly forever unless she spies on runaway teens, she agrees to infiltrate the Smoke, a colony of refugees from the "tyranny of physical perfection." At first baffled and revolted by the rebels' choices, Tally eventually bonds with one of their leaders and begins to question the "validity of institutionalized mutilation - especially as it becomes clear that the government's surgeons may be doing more than cosmetic nipping and tucking

Fiction When seventeen-year-old Antonio is accused of killing his father and is sent to jail, he begins writing to his girlfriend, sixteen-year-old Natasha, and the two correspond with each other over the course of the next ten years. As Antonio struggles to stay alive in prison, Natasha must make some choices that will change her life forever and all the while they cling to the hope that they will one day be together again.
5 Lynch, Chris. Inexcusable. Simon and Schuster/Atheneum, 2005. $16.95. (0-689-84789-0). Fiction High-school senior Keir has a football scholarship for college next year and considers himself to be a "good guy" who lives with his widowed father and who has two sisters in college. During a football game, Keir accidentally causes an opponent to become paralyzed, and the victim sends Keir a letter of forgiveness. Keir's peers start to call him "Killer," and Keir begins to live up to the name by engaging in reckless behaviors like hazing, vandalism, drinking, cocaine use, and date rape. The crescendo of irresponsible behavior leads to a disastrous end.

7 Weaver, Will. Full Service. Farrar, 2005. $17. (0-374-32485-9). Fiction At his mother's request Paul works in town at the Shell full service gas station. His family is a member of a nondenominational Christian sect and upon meeting a full array of characters working at the gas station Paul wonder whether his sect will approve of his new relationships. From making out with the hippie's daughter to witnessing petty crime, Paul's view of the world beyond his small Minnesota town changes.
