The Counseling Department at NVJH is committed to providing services to all of our
students. Counselors work collaboratively with students, faculty, and parents to provide
an atmosphere that allows for our students to be as successful as possible.
Beginning June 19, 2006, all students (K-12) will register for school at the Osseo Area Schools Enrollment Center. Please call the Enrollment Center at 763- 391-8608 to set up an appointment to enroll your students.

Following your registration at the Enrollment Center, your child’s counselor will call you
to schedule an appointment with you and your child. At that meeting, your child’s
counselor will orient you and your child to North View Junior High, provide a tour of the
building, select classes for your child, and create a schedule of classes for this school
year.

Programs:
I. Student Ambassador Program |
The Student Ambassador Program strives to: |
• Develop the leadership skills of North View students |
• Strengthen ties between the community and our school |
• Build relationships between our elementary schools and North View |
North View student ambassadors act as representatives of our school to our greater community. They may serve in many different capacities, such as volunteering their time at school open houses to greet parents and visitors and to conduct tours of the school. In addition, ambassadors can make trips to elementary schools in our district to tell younger students about North View Junior High. Student ambassadors may earn community and service hours for their participation in the program. |
II. Peer Mediation |
The Peer Mediation Program strives to: |
• Promote peace through positive conflict resolution |
• Allow students the opportunity to be proactive participants in conflict resolution |
• Develop livelong communication and listening skills of North View students |
• Develop leadership skills of North View students |
• Teach understanding |
• Combat violence |
Our Peer Mediation program uses highly-trained students to lead mediations when conflicts between students arise. Peer mediators work in pairs to help students articulate their problems and work toward peaceful resolutions that are effective and sustainable. |

Graduation Requirements
STATE OF MINNESOTA
EDUCATION EXPECTATIONS
The State of Minnesota established new educational requirements for all Minnesota schools and students. First, the State directed the Department of Education to set subject area expectations for what is taught in language arts, math, science, and social studies. The subject area expectations are called the Academic Standards. Second, the State determined that all students are required to earn a certain number of course credits in grades nine through twelve in order to graduate from high school.
Students will take State tests called the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA) in elementary school, junior high school, and high school to measure how well they have learned the Academic Standards. In addition, students are still required to pass the Minnesota Basic Skills Test in reading, written composition, and math in order to graduate.
The new State mandated educational requirements have led to changes in District 279—Osseo Area Schools. Each subject area will contain the appropriate Academic Standards and, most importantly, all ninth grade courses will count toward graduation. Ninth grade students must pass all courses in order to be on track to graduate with their class in June 2010.
Students entering grade nine in 2005 must pass the Minnesota Basic Skills Test in reading, written composition, and math. In addition, students must earn the following course credits in order to graduate from high school in District 279:
12 trimester credits English/Language Arts
9 trimester credits Math
9 trimester credits Science
10 trimester credits Social Studies
2 trimester credits Life Fitness/Health (must be taken in grades 10-12)
3 trimester credits Arts (theater, visual arts, media arts, music)
19 trimester credits Electives
64 Total Trimester Credits
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Students must earn 64 credits in grades 9-12 in order to graduate from Osseo Area School. Ninth grade students must pass all trimester courses to be on track for graduation. If a student fails to satisfactorily complete specified curricular areas, he/she may be required to repeat courses in the areas of deficiency to insure future academic success. It is the responsibility of the student and parent(s)/guardian(s) to be familiar with these guidelines.
Options for making up failed courses in Science, English, or Social Studies:
Successful completion of District #279 – 9 th Grade After School Make Up Class(es).
Pass an appropriate summer school class (at own expense); prior approval must be obtained from a building principal or counselor.
Students who are 16 years of age or older have the option to enroll in the Osseo Area Learning Center Independent Study Program.
Successful completion of On-line courses through Northern Star On-line.
Options for making up a failed Math course:
Pass an appropriate summer school class (at own expense); prior approval must be obtained from a building principal or counselor.
Take an appropriate Math class at the senior high level.
Information about the District #279 - 9 th Grade After School Make Up Class(es) for
3 rd trimester:
These classes will:
Be held in North View Junior High.
Be held Monday through Thursday from approximately 2:50-4:20 PM.
Be taught by a licensed teacher.
Have maximum of twelve to fourteen students enrolled.
There will be no charge for the classes and students will be able to ride the late busses home.
Parents and students are required to fill out an application form in order to participate in the after school program.
Students can only make up one class.
