Flavor of lollipops
Activities Samuel Born - The lollipop machine maker
History of lollipops:
The first candy on a stick was probably created by cavemen who maintained beehives and collected honey by stick, according to the National Confectionary Association,. Not wanting to waste the sweet residue, they, most likely, licked the utensil and the first unintentional lollipop, or, candy on a stick, was born. Archeologists discovered that ancient Arabs, Chinese and Egyptians produced fruit and nut confections which were "candied" in honey which served as a preservative. Because candy has a sticky substance, recent discoveries have hinted that sticks were inserted into these treats to make them easier to eat.

Samuel Born was a Russian immigrant who invented a lollipop making machine. In 1916, San Francisco gave the ingenious candy maker the keys to the city for inventing the Born Sucker Machine. The machine mechanically inserted sticks into lollipops. Samuel Born is also credited with inventing chocolate sprinkles, or jimmies for ice cream cones.
