Auditing
Auditing of classes for No Credit is NOT an option for Maple Grove Senior High students.

Credit Load
The school year is divided into three 12-week trimesters with a modified six- period day schedule. Students are required to carry at least five classes per trimester, regardless of the number of credits previously earned. Typically, sophomores are expected to take six classes; however, they may be permitted to take a study hall with administrator or counselor approval.

With limitations, other courses are available outside of the regular high school day. A student may earn up to three credits above regular enrollment per year. For example, a student may earn one credit in summer school and two more credits in Independent Study during the school year. Counselor recommendation is necessary, prior to enrollment, to receive credits toward graduation.

Failure in a Required Class
A failure in a required class can be made up in one of the following ways:

• Repeat the class
• Enroll in Summer School (through Osseo Area Learning Center — see your counselor)
• Enroll in an Independent Study course (through Osseo Area Learning Center — see your counselor for eligibility and enrollment information)

Grading
Grades for scholastic achievements shall be in letters A, B, C, D, and F and shall be recorded on report cards and the permanent records accordingly. The letter grade is transposed to number equivalents as follows for computing grade point average:

A+ & A-----------------4.00

A- ----------------------- 3.67

B+----------------------- 3.33

B ------------------------ 3.0

B- ----------------------- 2.67

C+----------------------- 2.33

C ------------------------2.0

C- ----------------------- 1.67

D+ ---------------------- 1.33

D ------------------------ 1.0

D- ----------------------- .67

F ------------------------ 0

A student’s GPA (Grade Point Average) is determined by multiplying the credits earned for a class times the point equivalency for the grade earned for that class. Add up the total products for all of the classes taken and divide by the number of classes taken. Grade point averages are calculated by trimester and cumulatively.

Weighted Grading
Beginning in 2004-05, all district 279 high schools will have a weighted grading system. Grades between “A” and “C” in classes designated as AP and ALP will receive an additional .34 value. This will only apply to grades earned beginning with the 2003-04 school year. This value will be used to determine a weighted GPA and weighted rank. All students will have a regular GPA, a weighted GPA, a regular class rank, and a weighted class rank reported on their final report card and transcript.

Every teacher will develop and implement a grading system for his/her classes, which will include the class expectations students must meet in order to pass the class. Teachers will make their grading systems known to the students during the first week of each term.

Graduation Requirements

Graduation Requirements:
IMPORTANT:  9th Grade Students Must Pass All Courses In Order To Be On Track To Graduate With Their Class In June 2009
For the MGSH staff to recommend a student for graduation, the student must pass all State of Minnesota tests, pass 9 trimesters of Foundations and satisfy the following minimum requirements:

12 trimester credits in English
10 trimester credits in Social Studies (Must have credits in U.S. History, Geography and World History, Economics and Government & Citizenship)
9 trimester credits in Science
9 trimester credits in Math
3 trimester credits in the arts (Theater, Drama, Art classes, Dance, Music, Media Arts)
1 trimester credits in Health
1 trimester credits in Life Fitness
19 trimester elective credits
64 trimester credits, plus

Requirements:
• Complete 9 trimesters of Foundations
• Successfully complete 20 high standards in grades 10 —12
• Pass Minnesota Required Tests in reading, math, and written composition
• Changes may occur based on School Board and/or Legislative decisions

Incomplete's
1. Incomplete notices will be sent home for all students who receive an ‘incomplete” grade for the trimester.
2. When an “incomplete” is given for a final trimester grade:

a) The teacher will give the student fifteen (15) school days to make up the work. If the student chooses not to complete the course during the extended time, he/she will receive a letter grade of “F.”

b) The building principal or the classroom teacher may extend the time limit where circumstances so require.

3. The student will be informed in writing when an “incomplete” is changed to a grade.

Pass/Fail Grading Option
Pass/Fail grading is NOT an option for students in REQUIRED classes.
Elective courses may be taken on a pass/fail basis with the permission of the instructor of the course. Any such request must be made within the first two weeks of the trimester.

 Repeating Courses
If a student fails a course and the course is repeated at MGSH and passed, the failing grade can be removed from the transcript. This request must be made in writing to an assistant principal or registrar. A student may elect to repeat a course that he/she has passed to improve the grade-point average.

If this is the wish of the student, he/she must inform the teacher that the course is being taken for the purpose of improving the GPA and he/she must inform his/her administrator/counselor or registrar so that the original grade can be removed. An additional credit is not earned by repeating a course.

Report Cards
It is the right of every student to be informed of his/her academic progress. In order to ensure a student of this right, a report will be given to the student at the conclusion of each trimester. Report cards will be mailed at the end of the year.

Schedule Changes
When a student registers for a class, he/she has the responsibility of remaining in the class and completing it. Changes may be honored if the change has the best interest of the student’s education in mind, if the teachers involved approve the change, and if the reason for changing a class is one of the six “acceptable” reasons listed below. If a class is to be dropped or added, it should be changed during the first week of a trimester. All schedule changes are subject to parent and principal approval and class availability.

The only acceptable reasons for a schedule change are:

1. Attended summer school program and eliminated need for credit.
2. Want to drop a study hall to add a class.
3. Have a written doctor’s excuse and cannot take class.
4. Class has been determined by a teacher to be beyond the student’s ability.
5. Have been accepted on a special program.
6. Administrative action.

Important Note: (Classes dropped after the first week of the trimester will result in a failing grade for the course.

Keep in mind that it may not be possible in all cases to get the student the exact schedule that the student wants. However, the student will be given the best possible schedule available.

Study Hall
Some students may prefer to carry five classes and use the extra period to study. Students who are not scheduled for a class must be in a scheduled study hall. Study hall rules are established by the study hall teacher/supervisor and are to be adhered to by students in the class. Study halls will be maintained as quiet places to study. Recreation (e.g. card playing) will not be allowed.

If a student does not feel the need for study hall time, he/she is encouraged to take six classes or explore other alternatives such as a teacher aide, an office aide, etc. No credit is earned while taking a study hall.

Study Hall attendance is mandatory. Students wishing to take makeup exams or participate in other teacher-supervised activities during study hall times must prearrange the activity and show a pass to the study hail supervisor. The student must return to Study Hall with a signed pass by the end of the period.
