A "caliper" (shown below) is a measuring device commonly used in engineering design. Its most common uses are to measure inside and outside diameters, and the depth of holes. Calipers vary in accuracy. Some are only accurate to a tenth of an inch while others are accurate to a thousandth of an inch or less!
