You should request recommendations from people who know your strengths.
Colleges will request core course instructors.
Keep in mind that these individuals are often busy, and therefore you should allow those who are willing to assist enough time to meet their deadlines. Please be selective. Usually two will be sufficient.
A teacher, counselor or other referee can expect to get the following from a student before drafting a letter of recommendation.
- Provide clear instructions about who the letter should be sent to, along with information about what the letter is in aid of and whether it is for a scholarship or a specific university program.
- A copy of the student recommendation form and the parent recommendation form completed. Make sure they know what your unique talents are and the experiences that confirm this.
-
A copy of your resume or list of all activities, accomplishments, organizations, honors, and awards you have received. Keep in mind that schools generally look at the scope and depth of your experiences. It is usually better to show that you were truly committed.
- Letters of recommendation will be place in a sealed envelope by the staff member and mailed directly to the college to ensure confidentiality.
- Please provide a stamped addressed envelope for each recommendation (addressed to college where recommendation should be sent).
- Write a Thank you note to referee.
Be attentive to the application deadlines of the college to which you are applying and allow teacher, counselor or other referee a minimum of TWO WEEKS to prepare your letter.
