While Ty is out exploring one day, he finds Gemma, a Topsider, in an abandoned submarine. Gemma is looking for her older brother, who lives in the ocean. But Gemma doesn’t know anything about living undersea—she can’t even swim. Ty’s family takes her in, amid their own fears of the Seablite Gang, a group of pirates whose capture means that the pioneer families living in the sea can keep their lifestyle.
Reading the author’s vivid descriptions about what life could be like living under the ocean is remarkable enough. Along with Gemma’s arrival, Ty’s way of life in jeopardy, and the Seablite Gang putting fear into the pioneers, Dark Life has enough mystery and intrigue to hold a reader’s attention through the entire story.
