I. Course Description High Performance classes for academically talented students offer content similar to a regular class with variations in pacing, depth of study and supplementary materials. These classes also emphasize autonomous learning skills such as creativity and critical thinking, problem solving, research, understanding of self and others, and career awareness. High Performance classes are offered in English, social, math, and science. II. Student Characteristics Students in High Performance classes should have three characteristics to be successful. 1. Superior Academic Ability. 2. Creativity 3. Task Commitment III. Application Process 1. Students pick up an application form from their English, social, math, and science teacher. A form must be filled out for each HP class. The form is completed and signed by the student and a parent. The student returns the form to his current English, social, math, and science teacher. 2. Students who are currently in an HP class need to fill out the form, but do not take the HP test, as long as they have maintained a B or better grade. 3. Students applying for the first time need to fill out the form, and take the HP test. The test is a 30 minute Cognitive Abilities Test and a writing sample. 4. The three criteria for selection to an HP class are grades, the Cognitive Abilities Test, and the writing sample. 5. Parents will be notified via a letter in the mail which is sent at the end of May or beginning of June. IV. Timeline for 2008 1. February 25-29: Teachers distribute application forms to students. 2.
